Experiencing the Anti-Doom-Dome

"He took every opportunity Holroyd gave him of touching and handling the great dynamo that was fascinating him. He polished and cleaned it until the metal parts were blinding in the sun. He felt a mysterious sense of service in doing this. He would go up to it and touch its spinning coils gently. The gods he had worshipped were all far away. The people in London hid their gods."

Hoogerbrugge interactive site

Check out Hoogerbrugge..a fantastic animator/illustrator with a strange interactive website, very otherwordly. There's lots of different themes and stories you can follow through his animations. I thought it was a good example of audience participation and how interactive things can be.

Do SAD lamps work at combatting Seasonal Affective Disorder?

..."Blood levels of the hormone melatonin, which may be abnormally high at certain times of day, are rapidly reduced by light exposure. Depending on when bright light is presented, the body’s internal clock - which controls daily rhythms of body temperature, hormone secretions, and sleep patterns - shifts ahead or is delayed when stimulated by light. These physiological time shifts may be the basis of the therapeutic response..."

Seasonal Affective Disorder

"Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) is a type of depression that has a seasonal pattern. It is characterised by episodes of depression that recur at the same time each year.

SAD is sometimes known as 'winter depression' because the symptoms are more apparent during the winter.

As with other kinds of depression, two of the main symptoms of SAD are a low mood and a loss of interest in ordinary things. Other symptoms of SAD include:

  • being less active
  • putting on weight
  • sleeping more

SAD affects people mostly in the winter

As SAD most commonly happens in winter, the symptoms are worse in the winter months. SAD sometimes affects people in the summer, although this is rare.

The symptoms of SAD often start as the days begin to get shorter in the autumn. They are worst during December, January, and February. For most people with SAD, the symptoms start to improve by spring time, then disappear.

How common is SAD?

In the UK, it is thought that SAD affects around 7% of people. It tends to affect mainly younger people, especially those in their twenties. Depression in general affects twice as many women as men. This figure is likely to be the same for SAD.

Outlook

Like any type of depression, SAD can be a difficult condition to live with. Symptoms can make you feel tired, stressed and unhappy. However, a number of treatments and medications are available, including:

005. Control Sphere

This is the interface design for the central control sphere, I'm going to work on more details about motion and interaction and put forward more of a narrative for the interactive process.
Let me know any changes or thoughts.

Concept realisation parts list:

001. Index. [for cataloguing and collation of images]
002. Bikes. [for 'power' - collective selfless collaboration]
003. Dome - outer [for instant reflection of exertion/effort of cyclists]
004. Dome - inner [for exploration of concepts and collaborative visualisation]
005. Control Sphere [for collaborative creation and control of inner visualisation]

Exercise machine fun.

With all our talk of exercise machines I couldn't help but think of this brilliant video by the band OK GO...makes me smile :)

T Shirt Ideas

here's a few mock ups of some tee designs, based on Lulu's illustrations.
Any preference or ideas for other designs?

A typographic Hierarchy

These are the typefaces that have been thrashed out for use in the presentation and visual materials associated with the project.

KIN - DESIGN

On wednesday morning we had the pleasure to meet the people of KIN!!

During this morning KIN had prepared a impressive presentation of the importance of collaborating & networking. They showed examples of how they started out with just the two of them, and through collaborations ended up with an entire network of people they collaborated with.

After the presentation, Kevin provided us with the chance to talk with him about our projects and was happy to answer all our questions.

This has been really useful to us and we all are extremely happy with the giving oppertunity.

Organisation / Planning

Oke, after another day of communicating/gathering art materials, we've came up with a plan how to organise things (who is doing what):

Lulu - Illustrating content (visualisation of how the anti-Doom-Dome works)
Jane - Index
Ollie - Coding (structure)
Ed - Presentations / website
Gus - Process video / website
Lucy - Propaganda film of the Dome
Thomas - Coding & drinking 'theneverendingeverlastingcontiniumpintofbeer'
Dominique - Visuals (pictures I like)
Natalie - Visuals (stop motion - Vulcano)
Viveka - Sculpting model of the Dome & walking Hugo

video test...

hello... this is the video test i made...

song for fireworks from lucy stokton on Vimeo.

it is a video of daytime fireworks display run through interaction, it zooms out and lightens in colour when the vocals increase so with the audio energy you get to see a clearer/better picture... obviously we are not using sound power but still... the software i used is a tad erratic, but that is why i use it...
This is the kind of index I'm thinking of - its got the right tone: mixture of the specific and the obscure, I think these kinds of words will generate an interesting and varied response.

bike power

the collective power pushes to see a clearer picture of us, the earth, the future. - us living on this earth in the future.

this line is alright.

doom and gloom

This morning the Governor of the Bank of England said we could look forward to ten sober years;
their are going to be half a million job losses in the public sector and at the same time those of us who do work will have to work longer before we collect our pensions. How will news like this shape peoples view of utopia or their need to dream of one. In theory this should be the right time for collective thinking on utopia, as it was in other times of depression

our utopias

Improv everywhere

Everyone of us already seen that freeze events. Improv everywhere is a team working around that type of event, involving a lot of different unknown people into a huge event, and create new space, new time into our world. Kind of ephemera utopia.

So far, so good

The clock on my laptop shows 1:05 am, which means Day 2 at onedotzero_cascade has just come to an end, and feels like a nice moment to share some brief thoughts about the work we've done so far, from a personal perspective that is.

For all of you who may not be quite familiar with the project we're working on, let's catch up: in the past, mankind’s visions of the future were largely optimistic but a decade into the 21st century, seems like there is a propensity for doom and gloom. Well, onedotzero wants the theme of utopia to bring a sense of adventure, hope and positivity about our future world to this years cascade project and onedotzero_adventures in motion festival.

So yes, we're dealing with an exciting but complex topic that can keeps us going for ages, which I think has set us a nice challenge in terms of narrowing down the good number of ideas we have come up with over the last couple of days. Even when there are 10 of us, all with different skills and cultural backrounds, we have managed to converge in a very thought-provoking way. There are many interesting concepts we've been exploring, tech resources we would like to take advantage of and approaches we will need to consider in order to define clearly our final idea.

We're not there yet but we're working on it. And you know what? It feels great.

Everything everywhere

At some point we discussed the fact that social media and technology has changed the way we function today, making us all more connected to each other in some ways, constantly sharing information or pictures of our lives and as someone put it making the 'present' into the 'past' by constantly documenting it. We talked about the good and bad sides to this trend. We also wondered where this trend will go in the future.
On the tube home I saw an ad for a mobile phone company that jumped out at me because it summed up this idea of constantly being connected to technology with the slogan 'Everything Everywhere'.Here's their vision..Maybe to some people this is a Utopian vision?
http://everythingeverywhere.com/vision/

"We believe that wherever they are in the world, they should be able to access whatever they want, whenever they want it – at the touch of a button, with the flick of a switch, in the blink of an eye. We want to bring our customers closer to the people, places and things that matter most to them, giving them instant access to everything, everywhere."

Studio AKA

An inspiring and imaginative animation company based in London is Studio AKA. I don't know if it's relevant specifically to our brief but looking at some of their short films is a good starting point perhaps.http://www.studioaka.co.uk/
Jojo in the Stars is a particularly atmospheric animation: http://www.studioaka.co.uk/#/work-jojointhestars

Collaboration

Here's a few more pictures of us all sharing our ideas for the project. We're all from different creative backgrounds so have a lot of different ideas. I'm really enjoying learning from everyone in the group, and I think we've got lots of potential to create something fantastic. It's really inspiring to swap ideas, and I reckon we've got a very positive group dynamic going on!

Jeff Soto

I really love the work of Illustrator Jeff Soto. For me his work is really interesting, It's futuristic and surreal. It looks both apocalyptic and dark at the same time as being quite positive and dream-like. Maybe this is a good example of what we were saying about Utopia not being perfect but having elements of darkness too?

Norman McLaren Animations

Some of our discussions about mapping and representing peoples feelings or emotions etc reminded me of the work of pioneering animator Norman McLaren...Here's a few examples from the 1940's of how he illustrated sounds using shapes and colour.

Britian from Above

On http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LV6l8AvjtqE there is a clip available where one can see the infrastructure of our traffic (boats, taxi's, childeren playing, mobile phone network, etc).
this project is called "Britian from Above". Might be an inspiration for us?

small ideas presentation on the tuesday afternoon

On tuesday, we all went our own way in the afternoon to create/develop our own idea of the 'brief'. We came together at 3 in the doodle bar to present the ideas to each other and to get responses.

the ideas in a short synopis are (sorry if i forget one / misunderstood it):
- by doing sport creating power energy
- mapping (emotion create colours)
- creating an image of an utopia in a room
- avatar
- telling people that they life a great life
- transforming london into a playgarden / attraction park

At the moment we are still further developing the ideas to come up with one that is amazingly briliant!!
